Guiding Modern Seekers Through Timeless Traditions
Nanda Kumar, lovingly known around the world as Gangesha, is a respected yoga teacher, spiritual guide, author, and Co-founder of Rishikul Yogshala & Gangesha Retreats in Rishikesh, India. For more than a decade, he has dedicated his life to preserving and sharing the authentic teachings of Yoga, Vedanta, Buddhism, Ayurveda, and the Himalayan Tradition with students from every corner of the world.
Having trained over 18,000 students through internationally recognized 200-hour, 300-hour, and advanced Yoga Teacher Training Courses, Gangesha has become one of India’s most trusted voices in traditional yoga education. His teachings extend far beyond physical postures, guiding students toward deeper self-awareness through meditation, pranayama, Yoga Nidra, philosophy, Ayurveda, and conscious living.
What distinguishes Gangesha is not merely his mastery of yogic techniques, but the depth of his own spiritual journey—one rooted in direct experience, contemplation, and lifelong study.

The First Door: Vedanta and the Call of the Forest
Born in Bangalore, Karnataka, Nanda Kumar entered spiritual study at an early age within the ancient Vedanta and Siddha traditions. Initiated as Brahmachari Gangesha Chaitanya, he was immersed in teachings that explored one of humanity’s oldest questions: What is real?
His family envisioned a future scholar and respected public figure. Yet the teachings awakened something entirely different. As a young boy, he found himself increasingly drawn inward, questioning the nature of existence itself.
One day, while expected to be attending his studies, he quietly disappeared into a nearby forest. Hours later, his family found him sitting peacefully among the trees. Though he returned home, the experience marked the beginning of a lifelong search for truth beyond conventional ambitions.
The teachings of Sage Thirumular and the wisdom of the Tirumandiram deeply influenced his understanding of yoga—not as exercise, but as a profound science of inner transformation.
The Second Door: Buddhism and the Path of Mindfulness
Seeking another framework for his spiritual development, Nanda Kumar entered the study of Buddhism.
His journey eventually brought him to Sarnath and Varanasi, where he immersed himself in both Theravada and Mahayana Buddhist traditions. There he explored meditation, mindfulness, compassion, and the philosophy of suffering.
Recognizing his natural inclination toward spiritual life, Buddhist teachers encouraged him toward monastic ordination. Yet another path awaited him.
Rather than taking formal vows as a monk, he continued searching for a tradition that would unite philosophy, meditation, breath, and embodied practice into a complete system of transformation.
The Third Door: Yoga and the Himalayan Tradition
That search led him to Yoga.
Not the modern fitness-oriented interpretation often seen today, but the classical yoga of India—where posture, breath, philosophy, and meditation function together as a complete path of self-realization.
Under teachers of the Himalayan Tradition, Nanda Kumar began a disciplined study of asana, pranayama, meditation, and yogic philosophy. Gradually, the body aligned with the breath, and the mind found increasing stillness.
His spiritual home was ultimately found in the lineage of Swami Rama, later deepened through study with Swami Veda Bharati, one of Swami Rama’s foremost disciples.
The Himalayan Tradition remains the silent foundation beneath all of his teachings today. Along the way, he also drew inspiration from the teachings of the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, the Brahma Kumaris, and Buddhist traditions, creating an integrative approach that honors multiple streams of wisdom while remaining rooted in authentic lineage.

The Human Behind the Teacher
Gangesha lives in Rishikesh with his wife and daughter. His experiences as a parent, along with his personal journey through Vitamin B12 deficiency while following a vegetarian lifestyle, inspired deeper study into nutrition, fermentation, and Ayurvedic health practices.
These real-life experiences continue to enrich his teaching, making it practical, relatable, and deeply human.
A Living Philosophy
Students know him as Gangesha, a name inspired by the sacred Ganges River that flows through Rishikesh—symbolizing purification, movement, and the continuous flow of life itself.
His teachings invite students to discover that the spiritual path is not separate from ordinary life. Rather, every experience becomes part of the journey toward self-understanding.
As Gangesha often reminds his students:
“Earth is a beautiful paradise meant for exploring all dualities of life. Only by experiencing both sides can we understand the desires we carry and transform them.”
Through his teachings, writings, retreats, and trainings, Nanda Kumar (Gangesha) continues to guide thousands of seekers toward a deeper, more authentic experience of yoga—one rooted not in performance, but in awakening.
